When you begin the Matrix Online before you decide the appearance of your RSI (Residual Self Image) or even your RSI's code name and bluepill (This is what you are before you are "awakened" ) name you are faced with the choice of what "trait" your character will be. In CR1.0 (Combat Revision 1.0) the descriptions of each trait were created and haven't been changed since the switch-over to CR2.0 (Combat Revision 2.0). Therefore, the definitions of each trait are irrelevant. Now what the traits DO matter for is how your character's attributes are set up, but first, to explain exactly what attributes do what (For more information on what each specific item does refer to this guide on MxO Resource) :
Belief: Represents a character's confidence in themselves. Activities that require absolute conviction, such as hyper-jump and combat toughness, benefit from a high belief.

Perception: The character's ability to notice subtle changes in their surroundings. Activities that require a careful study of an opponent benefit from a high Perception.

Reason: This represents a character's problem solving capability. A character with a high Reason is able to more easily hack the base equations of the Matrix, and abilities such as Attack Programming and Execute Program benefit from this.

Focus: This is the the character's ability to concentrate and manage their performance. A high focus allows you to maintain concentration under duress, or shrug off damage. Activities that require physical or mental resistance, and precise body control benefit from a high focus

Vitality: This measures a character's overall physical well being. Health Points, which represent a character's ability to absorb damage, benefit from a high Vitality.

Now that you know what each attribute effects it is easier to explain that the trait you choose decides where certain points are allocated to which attributes. Below is a chart of every trait and how many points you start with in each attribute. Next to it you will see what specific class each trait is more geared towards. For more information on classes, head this way: Ability/Class Trees
Detached Spectator: (Spy/Hacker) Belief: 8 Perception: 11 Reason: 8 Focus: 5 Vitality: 8
Devoted Ascetic: (MA(Martial Arts)/Hacker) 11 8 8 8 5
Fanatic Self Improver: (Guns/Spy...since the bonus is in vitality and vitality attribute doesnt really help with much this trait isn't particularly good for any class, but is bad for MA and hacker...) 5 8 8 8 11
Inquisitive Genius: (Spy/Guns) 5 8 11 8 8
Lunatic Fringe: (Guns/MA) 11 8 5 8 8
New Age Hippy: (MA/Guns) 8 8 5 11 8
Secluded Introvert: (MA) 8 5 8 11 8
Suspicious Cynic: (Spy/Guns) 5 11 8 8 8
Troubled Intellectual: (Spy/Hacker) 8 8 11 5 8
True Believer: (MA/Hacker) 11 5 8 8 8
Now that you have your starting attribute points set you will be able to add 1 point to any attribute every time you level up. Feel free to play around when it comes to this and see what works for you (For advice on allocation of points check these forum threads for tips from the veterans of the game: Operatives, Hackers, Coders ).
Should you accidentally allocate points in an attribute that you later want to get back you can always run a stat hack mission that resets all your attributes back to 0 and frees up all the points you gained during the grind. This mission is run by purchasing a Stat Hack Ticket for 10,000 $info at your particular organization's Archivist Broker (Look here for these locations marked by a small book icon on your map).

Neat little guide that.
Might I suggest you add what trait is good for what role.

Now if there was only a way to change them without starting a new character. Cool guide, now I wont, when I create a new charcter, realise I have no idea when the best trait is for the tree I have chosen and then have to cancel to find out >_<

Yeah, i'm gonna flesh it out later, just remembered new players have no way of seeing which attribute affects what also, so I'm going to add that and say on each one what each trait is best slated for class-wise...

Seems strange to me that Fanatical Self Improver is bad for MA. Doesn't the description (perhaps you could add in the games decriptions of each too!) mention about being in peak physical form? Shouldn't that be best for MA? (Not saying you're wrong, just that the games description is misleading...)

It's bad for MA because the attribute that receives a penalty is one of the core attributes for that class.

Yeah, I know... I was just wondering why they made it so that Self Improver (as in peak physical fitness) is fundimentally bad at MA!

They changed what stats benifit what when they introduced CR2, but still haven't changed the character creation text, I think Rarebit mentioned why it can be though.

Might want to change this to "resets your points back to what your trait starts at" instead of 0 or people may take it up as meaning you can reset your trait.

I got a big question. and I can't work numbers out. but say your attribute starts out at 5. and at level 25 you level it to 30pts. do you get 50% bonus or does the game cap you at 25% based on your lvl?

Every point beyond the first five gives you a 2% increase.
