Something needs to be done to plug the whole that the new people are leaking out of. They dissapear. Uriah is a good starting point since the npcs are low, the whole trail starts there with informative npcs & collectors. In the last year the area has been improved to help new players. There is a decent amount of new people coming to MxO and Uriah each day, this is not the first time I have seen someone who has been playing a whole day come into contact with another player for the first time. I think the answer in this case is a server merge.

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago. It's definitely possible but the science behind this requires either someone very qualified or a decent amount of R & D time. It may be worth the small expenditure, could be good for marketing also if SOE could put an article out there in the press that their Matrix game is one of the first MMO's to include this technology. The idea is that the single in-game camera would be switched off and there would be two virtual cameras next to each other. One for left eye one for right eye. When the two streams are seperated by the Glasses it gives the feeling of depth like you are really there. Rendering two cameras in real time could be more demanding on the system since it has to calculate all the lines twice, however character positions, animation and textures would only need one space in memory so maybe it wouldn't have that much of an impact on game performance for lower end systems I'm not sure. Ideally in the options menu there would be a Sterioscopic or 3D option, this would turn off the centered camera and replace it with two parallele cameras, one for each eye for those with the special glasses. This is something that if you do it wrong you will make people feel sick real bad, but if you pull it off could be quite amazing, especially with things like hyperjump and slow motion. Also you would probably only want to have this option turned on for an hour or two, otherwise the sickness & disorientation afterwards would be too much ;P

UniToxic wrote: Chuui wrote: As to merging down to one server with forced PVP zones? I'd cancel again, right there and then, and never look back.
Thats why many have proposed Syntax and Recursion to be merged as they are similar, so you have NewMergedServer + Vector, 2 servers, 2 rulesets.
Chuui has since stated his/her exit from MxO, so the point about leaving if all servers were merged & flagged doesn't have weight. The idea of having 2 servers is really not much better than 3. Everything needs to be combined into 1 if it were to have benifits. Flagged? I was leveling a character on Vector when it was busy 2 yrs ago... I understood that was the way MxO was designed to be played, it really worked well having the social aspect of the matrix dictate when the PvP would occur. But on a non-flagged server like Syntax PvP only happens when your opponent decides to flag so that means people think (oh if i am flagged i will get attacked) which is not how it works/worked on vector.

And no, you can't make the buff a game-changing buff. Players who would have a decisive advantage over others would just simply "hold" the turf forever since unbuffed players wouldn't stand a chance. It's like fighting someone fully buffed from Upgrade Master, and told, "If you can't beat him, you can't have those buffs and you can't get said reward for holding this turf."
The bufs scale depending on which group is failing at the time. The point of the bufs is NOT to enhance the winning side... the point of the buffs is to enhance the loosing side so they CAN take on the winning side. The best fights are when it's evenly matched.

Ballak wrote: I kind of have to interject this. Say we put Turf Warz into MxO. What's really there to motivate them to do anything at all with this new system? Everyone already PvPs mostly at Mara. No one gets anything but pointless CQs and the thrill of PvP.
That's the point, at the moment no one gets anything but pointless cq and fun, with this idea they contribute to the org's power standing points. People can continue to "already pvp at mara" but this time there are points of interest in the immediate area. Teams will have to stop reinforcements joining their attacking or defending group while they are in transit, hold the area after a sweep, or try and powerless someone while they are flipping the switch. If there is 11 mech and 2 zion... the zions would try to get one of the unattended towers which means the larger group might send 2 or 3 to guard the other two towers (zion in this scenario gets fun balanced pvp while trying to take over the tower) if they won their 2v3 they could capture the tower and get buffed to hell allowing them to take on the 2v11 at the main tower. Ballak wrote: Why make these "turf" things around the city a viable thing to PvP for. I mean isn't that just basically what the constructs were for? Look how that turned out.
some don't like the long time wait to get back into the construct for pvp. so they just go to Mara, with the towers this allows them to fight at mara or other districts should there be a concensus to do so. with the clubs, I think people would find it fun to run with 50 others into a club full of 50 reds and have a large battle with an objective. There would be a specified time and allot of people would log on for the attack. Likewise for those defending, one of the best pvp defend events I was in we had to protect zaitso on vector the reds slowly poured in to the room, that would have been about 50v50. and what then after a club siege? well they can go back to mara, should the numbers not be in their favour they don't have to logout, they can use the towers to keep the fun balanced Ballak wrote: I mean honestly taxation won't work, because no one really buys anything from vendors anymore. And no one really cares about owning a building, or some zone buff no one really goes to and even if there was a buff, you can't make it a game-changing one.
Taxation would be for the areas where factions own clubs. The book store at Midian East sells construct books for 200k, archive tickets for 50k and org keys for 1000k, I wouldn't be surprised if a billion info gets put through there each week, capturing Avalon for 2 weeks or 4 or 6 could be profitable to a faction, this could help with gearing the pvpers in the group and funding the farmers that get the gear instead of the book store info going nowhere into a money sink

This would be automated pvp mechanics, nothing to do with rp. Taking pvp out of mara never works, it always ends up back at mara. But with a choice it could go to the other districts on occasion, all it would take would be 1 from each org to activate the switch in the other district (to avoid points camping). Alternate fix for this would be gain 0 org-points per 5mins of tower control if there are 0 flagged enemies in the area. If there are 15 flagged enemies in the area gain 15 points per 5mins of tower control.

part 2 is..
(2)scheduled club takeovers: 2-4 Clubs in each district are available for PvP sieges at specific times every 2 weeks (total 3-6 sieges each weekend), next siege time specified by the faction leader or approved officer after a successful capture. Victory could be declared after the attacking side defeats players defending the club, so that it's not just one pvp sweep the attacking side would have to take out high lvl npcs inside the area. Defenders would win if the attacking side was unable to complete the objective within the hour time limit.
Possible tax percentage gain from vendor purchases (would be benifitial for the faction holding the area that contains book stores or collectors that ask for 100mil). This system could also integrate into the cq system or org strength chart given at the end of each month.
fixes: to avoid fighting over who gets controll over the club after a win if there are multiple attacking factions signed up for the siege, this would be worked out before the scheduled time (through in-fighting, or dice rolls ;p ) holding faction could also be determined by who had the largest presence at the siege. (example of a club siege shown below)

The following is an example of content that would encourage people to log in, content that I believe we need to move towards if we want automated systems instead of frequent and consistent live events. It works off a rated shifting power & influence score for the 3 organizations that would be shown at the end of each month (maybe as a graph on the forums or in-game). Three things would sway this score, (1) takeovers towers (2)scheduled club takeovers (3) cq points (1)takeover towers: 3 org towers situated in a neighborhood (3 in mara, 3 in sai kung, 3 in historic) that have a PvP forced radius, each tower can be captured by an org in a pvp situation. There might be a handle(17sec) inside the tower that needs to be activated much like the spotlights at the blue sky event to initiate takeover. A reason to keep the tower in the short term might be buffs that scale, the side with less numbers may hav better buffs given by their tower which can help compensate the Zerg and encourage pvp no matter the numbers situation. Another reason to keep control over the tower may be some kind of integration into the cq system or org strength chart given at the end of each month. fixes: to avoid players camping out in remote unattended towers from International and Downtown to gain points without fighting, perhaps the other district's towers do not activate untill all three in Richland have been occupied and held. If players wanted to pvp in a different district then one member from each org could flip a seperate activation switch/option in their towers to activate the towers in that district. Shown below are some images of the idea I have in mind, as you can see these two towers are attached to the bridge near the Mara hardline, another good spot might be behind the hardline allowing the fight to continue in the main area. (FIGHTING WOULD BE ALLOWED IN THE TOWER, and on the back stairs leading up to them)

The tower design or positions may seem strange, I made these to help you visualize the concept. It should be fun having 45 reds swarming around the areas, the same pvp but with purpose, no more complaining about a zerg since buffs scale up/down depending on number balance. (edit: allthough now I think about it this addition would be good even without the buffs part)

I believe liaisons or their positions should be brought back, without them there is less activity & purpose. The idea of public meetings is quite bad.
*Liaison positions should come back, *there should be more tasks assigned to them and *there should be other similar positions that help with structure, deleting liaisons without anything to fill the gap is confusing

In the past Syntax was going through a low population time so I know how some Recursion players might feel. We are used to it on Syntax, I think Vector had a similar thing also. I would prefer a merge, all three servers, make international & downtown flagged, keeping richland and westview non flagged. The only problem I can see would be over spamming at the org meetings but I think that is going to be a problem regardless.

Hyper related buffs shouldn't be disclosed to attackers, otherwise specific classes will be allocated to someone during multifight pvp in the short term. Snipers and mkt sneaks would go for those without the defense buff on, unknown defense and resist placement is the only saver when fighting multiple enemies. I like how there is an unknown element with tactics also. Knowing the non-ability animations and adjusting stance as required is fun & organic, we don't need more icons to look at.

Diablo 3 actually looks pretty cool. I've never played any of the starcraft, warcraft, or diablo games, mainly becasue I dont like RTS games, but looks as if Diablo isnt actually RTS. However I'm not a huge fan of the fantasy genre either, but I do enjoy brutal demon-ish type stuff. I may checkout the old Diablo games, but I still got a feeling I will get bored with it. If combat was a little more intuitive I think it would appeal to me more, but even tho the creatures and enemys and locations are beautiful and diverse, its still a bit repeadative looking in gameplay looks like it will feel like a big grind.
I dont know, Maybe I'm wrong and it doesnt feel that way at all. Like I said, I've never played any of ther other games, but Diablo 3 has raised an eyebrow here.
Anyone care to tell me a bit about the 1st 2 games?
They were RPG, the time period is long ago before guns, and has an ancient feel to it.
Speaking of Diablo2, you start off with great cinematic, once you create your character the quests are easy to follow, each of the classes are very different, some people refer to this type of game as "hack and slash" but it's really more than that. All the different classes have separate skills trees which can be selected and hardened as you see fit.
The inventory system is good, the items have real worth you can appreciate. There are many variations on weapons, some have sockets you can expand on over time, you can put a red colored gem into to get Fire damage bonus for example, which would add the 1-3 (or 6-12) fire damage bonus, which would be added to the weapon's details. For example you might find a version of that Staff or Axe you like but it has 3 sockets, so you put 2 blue gems for cold damage and knockback rune to give the knockback stat. I remember making a killer cold Hammer a while back. And there was another stat called "flee", I remember having a 100% flee mask (looked cambodian).. whenever you whacked an NPC it would run off in terror!
The Amazon class is an archer and has specific arrow related skills, Sorceress can use lightning/thunder fire and ice, Paladin's are great team buffers and swords persons, Barbarians are weapon masters, Necromancers can bring skeletons and enemies back to life and do other weird stuff. The D2 expansion brought another two classes to the game, one is Druid which is in touch with wildlife and natural elements, Assassin is like a trap setter and sneak type character.
Areas are seperated into "ACTS" which each have their own cinematic and "town" which areas branch off. There are various bosses per act which require a little journey to get to. Once your character gets to the next Act he/she is able to transport back to previous acts if they want to help others with a quest or look at the vendors for that town (you can think of Acts like Districts in the matrix). Once you have completed Acts 1 through 5 it starts your character at Act1 again on nightmare difficulty, finishing it again puts you on hell difficulty.
There are two basic modes of play, one is Single-Player which you can use Open-Battlenet(under other multiplayer) with your single player characters, however this means people can use tools to modify their save files thus allot of cheating used to happen on open-battlenet. Some times you would join a server and the whole screen would be filled with fire outside town with max level characters doing crazy stuff.
The regulated multiplayer was just called "Battlenet" on us-west or asia for example, this means your characters are stored on the Blizzard servers, and cheating was minimal on those servers, if you don't play a character for 90 days it gets deleted there. But it's free to play online so this is understandable.
Multi player consisted of 8 player max to a game, this was enough for a team or a few teams to do quests, or meet in town to trade. Quite often there were trading games in the game list for specific items. Currency has a gold system but most trades happened for items. A popular trading measure was the SoJ (stone of jordan ring). Rareness was really defined with this game, when you killed a boss there was chance to get a rare item, you could see how good it was by it's stats and if you couldn't make use of it, someone could.
If you were to play now I would suggest installing Diablo2 and the Lord of Destruction expansion, after you create your character goto the options menu and change the resolution from 640x480 up to 800x600 (new in LoD). If circles don't look like circles change your advanced display settings on your computer to leave application resolutions at their native size should they not match your desktop resolution (to avoid stretching of game image on widescreens)
