Ever since beta when I was able to play the game I've always wondered why the devs made abilities into ability trees instead giving us a slew of abilities to mix/match as we see fit.  This is what I'm asking.  Talk all of the current abilities that we have in the game and put them into a giant list, then remove ALL of the ability trees.  Now adjust a few abilities that needed to be adjusted to make them usable for any circumstance.  Adjust the memory cost a bit and sepeate them into three categories -- Passive, offensive, defensive.  Passive will contain all the abilities used for buffing, self buffs, and general styles (Martial arts, guns, hacking ect..).  These will have a higher memory cost as they will be needed more so than the others.  Offensive will be all the offensive attacking abilities.  These will have a slightly lower memory cost than the passive.  Defensive are abilities used simply for defense / and debuffs.

Now that is sorted, you now have a recipe for extreme customization on your character.  What I'm getting at is imagine this as your load out:

-Jujitsu (basic awakening self defense)
-Karate
-Computer hacking
-Sky-high side kick
-Fire Arm mastery
-Full auto redux
-Stealth mastery
-Open Locks
-Sneak
-Wrist throw

then a mix of various defense type abilities.

Then you would have to level each ability from 1 - 50 so you can gain the maximum benefits for all the abilities.   Also maybe add a command line  when close to a hard line like  /operator load  (ability)  then in system you'd see  "(ability) Loaded  X amount of memory left"

I realize the combat would have to be changed significantly to accommodate this idea, so it's not even remotely feasible now, but it would be great to see this done this way, as it would remain truer to the films.

Abilities in a tree are generally best suited to supporting other abilities in that same tree.  Even if you freed abilities from tree restrictions you'd still have people loading primarily the same type of skills in order to maintain an effective synergy.

Yeah, I'm with Endo. Forcing everyone to relearn another new combat system will just alienate many who don't have the time to do so and will probably make them quit.

I'm happy with the tree system we have just now, I think it makes pretty good sense and the system we have now is pretty well balanced besides some little bits here and there(and even they are open to debate).

I'm not pushing to change anything.  It was a scenario i had and wanted to see what other thought of it.  Also if you could build loads like that what stuff would you come up with?

Also not everyone's stuff would be the same.  there would be so much customization it would be crazy.  Also I'd have loved to be in the room when the devs were brainstorming for combat.  Just to hear the ideas being passed around.

I've always thought that MxO would be a lot more interesting if you had enough memory to use two full disciplines (for example full Pistols and full Karate) a fighter would be a lot more varied as long as buffs and abilities were balanced with the extra memory.

I was thinking something along the same lines, but maybe not a full second tree, but like...75%. Honestly, this could be done, it would just be a matter of adjusting the memory right?

yeah, you'd have to adjust memory gain per level. Bu also SOE would have to adujst the status point allocation bonuses to allow for a more general, ability based combat system similar to CR1.

I lol'd!!! Yeah though, I agree with Endomorph, we have all ready had one bad combat change, let's not change this one to something completely different that sounds good and movie related but also sounds difficult become skilled with.

Not changing anything.  Not pushing to change anything.  Was just an idea I've always had and wanted to see what others thought about it is all.  And maybe get a few people to fantasize a bit and see what things they would load up if they could load any ability in the game and not be restricted by trees.

So in a perfect world, if everything was 100% balanced and every ability had a purpose what would be your dream load?
