I say start small, you see those useless abilities on soldier? Yeah, sharpshooter and multi-fighting, replace em with some basic grenade abilities. Sounds pretty soldiery to me.

um, did I suggest the idea of a new tree? No.... I said it should be a consumable based weapon. And your right, if it was a consumable based weapon, then everyone could infact use it. But here's the catch, you can make it so to code up a stack of just 5 grenades would take over 5 red frags, that would make them so you dont want to waste em if you had em, and thus not every one would even have them, not to mention, if the damage is only around 500 ish, and it has the same length to cast as a dev field, it has limited potential.
your arguments at this point are pointless at best, we already have an AOE class thus invalidating your "10 people could throw nades into mara and clear out a mass of reds" theory. And with correct dps, cast timer, and cost, balancing them would be quite easy.
Great Idea, love to se this in any form you can think of, the flash bomb type is perfect.

Although a grenadier tree (Like the post a few up) is an awsome idea, it's not gonna happen. For months people have asked for sword trees/zen tree/trojan hacker and all that, and it hasn't happened. However, using the existing resources already implmented, it would be pretty faesible.
