Development Discussion Development Roundtable Why can't we haz Mission Architect?? Why can't we haz Mission Architect?? Dr5mith 0 04/08/2009 06:02

'copied from CoX website, this is coming down the pipes to the game Today:

The First MMORPG to Offer User Created Content!

First City of Heroes® set a new standard for player creation and customization in MMOs with its Character Creator. Now, with Issue 14, this game takes another giant step, allowing players to design their own missions and story arcs to share with the entire City of Heroes community across all of our live servers. Using an intuitive interface, players can browse through other player created missions and create their own missions from the ground up. Players will determine details ranging from environments, mission objectives, and enemies, to written fiction and character dialogue; giving their stories nearly infinite depth and personalization.

Gain Fame and Rewards as a Mission Designer

Among other rewards, architects who create extraordinary content will garner acclaim and reputation. Community feedback will be paramount and some missions will elevate in status, unlocking new rewards and benefits for their creators.

Create Stories - Present your story to other players in the game through the story title, description, and character dialogue. Stories can be as short as a single mission and as long as five.

Create Characters - Use existing characters from City of Heroes lore or create your own characters from scratch using the costume creator and a robust powers selection interface. Create individual characters which can be used as enemies, allies and contacts or create whole enemy groups to fill your missions.

Write Dialogue - Every character that you place into a story or mission has its own dialogue. Whether it's the contact that directs characters to their mission, the hostages that you rescue, or the enemies that you must defeat, they all speak through text bubbles at various points during your encounters.

Define Objectives - Defend, collect, defeat, destroy, rescue, and more. Mission architects can string objectives together making missions as simple or complex as desired, using up to a current maximum of 25 objectives per mission.

Use Advanced Options - For characters and missions select alignment, placement, difficulty, animations, behavior and more. Every mission objective has multiple advanced options, allowing you to truly customize how you want your story to play out.

Test and Iterate Before Publishing - Take as much time as you want to create your content and test it by yourself or with others. Once your masterpiece is complete, you can Publish it for other players to enjoy and rate.

Find / Browse Other Stories

Sort Stories and Search for Key Criteria - Players can use the Mission Browser to sort published stories by rating, date, length, and title, or search for content using key words like the character who created them or the subject matter within the stories.

Hall of Fame - Stories that have achieved a critical combination of high player ratings and number of views will be elevated into Hall of Fame status and will be listed under the Hall of Fame section.

Developer's Choice - Stories that are hand-picked by the developer will be deemed Developer's Choice and listed within the Developer's Choice section.

How hard would that be for Dracomet and 9mmFu to do????

Just saying.....this would breathe new life into the game.

Sony Online Entertainment president, John Smedley reveals to Next Generation his plans for a DC Comics MMOG and how his cross-platform strategy will include handhelds like PSP.

On Friday, SOE announced a multi-part deal with Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment. The first component of the deal gave SOE control of WBIE's Matrix MMOG. The second and more significant part gave SOE rights to develop a DC comics MMOG for PC and consoles.

Clearly, SOE seeks to take a chunk of the considerable business that NCSoft's City of Heroes mustered in recent years. "On the design side, I think City of Heroes is a fantastic product. We have lots of people here who still play it," Smedley said. "It proved that a great comic book game can really bring in a subscriber base. What we're trying to do is make an even better game, and bring a very powerful brand to the mix. There are a lot of Superman and Batman fans out there."

Smedley laid out ambitious plans for the game. "It's early so we don't know everything just yet, but one thing we do know is that it's going to be multiplatform: PC, PS3 and potentially PSP. The specifics on that, well we don't know if they're going to share servers, but our thinking of the moment is that they could be slightly different games with different emphasis. Imagine if you could take your character across to different games. It'd be the same DC universe, but with different play styles for the console and PC," he said.

The general idea is that a player's character abilities in one platform version could carry over in some form and give benefit to your characters in the same series on another platform.

Different game

A successful title with a sizable base could dramatically impact the incremental sales of adjunct SKUs, though it could cut the other way too. If the first SKU doesn't sell well then retail will stock subsequent SKUs in low numbers.

"I'm not going to lie and say we have this all figured out, but we know what our goal is. We want to bring these products cross-platform," explained Smedley. "We also know that a PSP is not a PS3 so we need to do a different game. Maybe it's more of a top down game, but it's still going to be an MMO and have the same flavor, but the style and emphasis may be different on the PSP, PS3, and PC. You're looking at three different products, with the ability to carry your character across them if you so choose. This has become the core vision of our company and you're going to see this across a lot of products we do."

The as-yet-unnamed DC game is being developed internally at SOE's Austin studio.

Matrix management

So why did SOE buy The Matrix? By most retail accounts, the game's sales have been less than cosmic. Smedley says the potential exists for profits. "By offering The Matrix for play through Station access we saw an opportunity to make money on it and offer value to our subscribers. We think it's a great addition to the Station as a whole," he said.

Any retail issues surrounding The Matrix will remain in the hands of WBIE's original publishing partner, Sega. On the prospects of the Matrix as a going concern Smedley said, "We offered jobs to 25 of the Monolith core team that were running The Matrix. We intend to continue it and the live events as they were already going. Our plan is to do additional content and treat it like any of our other products." Those 25 employees will join SOE's studio in Bellevue, WA.

Smedley indicated that retail expansions may or may not be in the works for The Matrix "We aren't sure what we're going to do with that yet. We may offer something online digitally and we need to get our heads around the business as a whole and see what shape the game is in. The team is really good."

SOE was unwilling to share the number of active accounts on The Matrix or internal sales figures for the retail product.

  Hello Community!!

I have been running this same box since Beta.  In fact, I built it originally for the sole purpose of running mxo beta.  I have never ever had indoor lag issues on my ATI 9800 xt 256mb AGP card.  around patch 59 i started to have indoor issues.  I've tried rolling back the drivers 4 times to no luck and am stuck.  On a side note my dell xps lappy has the mobile 9800 and i have no issues.

Here is my info:

*I didnt paste Windows error reporting as it was only my vent and firefox a few times months ago.

February 17, 2008 (Computerworld) Updates that Microsoft Corp. began feeding Windows Vista users last week to prep PCs for next month's release of Service Pack 1 (SP1) have crippled some machines, according to messages posted to the company's support site.

Last Tuesday, Microsoft started sending Vista users two final prerequisite updates that are required before SP1 can be installed in March. The updates to the operating system's install components were delivered via Windows Updates, which automatically downloaded and installed them on the majority of Vista machines.

Users quickly started squawking.

In most cases, they reported that the final update hung while displaying the message "Configuring Updates Step 3 of 3 - 0% Complete," which was followed by a reboot of the PC. Which was followed by another reboot, and another. "[It] reboots ad infinitum," said Frank Melk on the Microsoft support newsgroup. A smaller number reported a different problem: After the update, their computer refused to boot normally.

Trying to boot into Safe Mode did no good, users said; the reboot loop cranked up then as well. "I am unsure as to what to do, because entering Safe Mode gives the same screen," Melk said. "Furthermore, I have no restore points saved, so going back to a known previous good config is no good either!"

Melk's mention of restore points referred to Windows Vista's System Restore, a tool that periodically takes a "snapshot" of the PC. Also called "restore points," they can be called up to return the machine to its condition at the time the snapshot was taken. Some users who posted messages to the same newsgroup said that they had managed to regain control of the computer by booting from their Vista install DVD, and selecting the "Restore from a previous restore point" option.

"The first two restore points available to me failed," noted another user, pegged as phazedoubt. "I had to go back 3 days before I found one that worked."

Others said they had been in touch with Microsoft support representatives -- the company offers free support to consumers on all update issues through a toll-free number (866-727-233SMILEY or e-mail -- and claimed that they had been told to boot from their Vista media and choose "Run Startup Repair."

"Apparently, so Microsoft says, my machine was restarted thinking it had downloaded an update, but really the update hadn't been downloaded," said user bicksbah on the support newsgroup. "So, upon reboot, it couldn't find the update and Vista kept trying to install it endlessly."

Messages left on the newsgroup indicate that Microsoft is aware of the problem. Someone identified as Darrell Gorter, who claimed to be with the company, asked users to send him log files "to determine a cause for the issue." Official company representatives, however, were not available Sunday for comment or confirmation.

Messages left on the same support newsgroup, in fact, show that the problem was first reported by users in December, when Microsoft offered a Vista SP1 release candidate to the general public, but required them to download and install the prerequisite updates manually, one after the other. The complaint volume picked up last month, when Microsoft opened a second, more finished, build to all comers.

Some users remained frantic because they did not have a Vista install or recovery disc; computer makers often forgo such niceties, instead putting the recovery files on the PC's hard drive. Others took Microsoft to the woodshed.

"What blows me away is that Microsoft has not posted anything on the site yet, at least nothing I could find," said redwinger in a message to the newsgroup on Sunday. "They should at least say, 'We know we have an issue and we are looking into it.' I bought the laptop with the OS loaded and I don't have the recovery disk. How screwed am I?"

Although it's impossible to gauge the extent of the prerequisite reboot problem from the support forums, the traffic on the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) newsgroup is substantial: the thread to which Melk, Gorter and phazedoubt posted included nearly 80 messages by mid-day Sunday, and had been viewed more than 23,000 times.

Two weeks ago, Microsoft announced it had completed SP1, and was sending it to OEMs for installation on new computers, and to duplication to prep retail copies. At the same time, however, it said it would not make it available to most users until mid-March, and would not deliver it automatically via Windows Update until April.

I"ve been saying hes the Best me Whole Life..(43 on New Years Day...yay for da old guy)

Link goes to this:
Neil Peart proves that he is still percussively pertinent to a younger generation of drummers by winning DRUM! magazine's "Drummies 2007" "Drummer Of The Year". He also won four other awards.

Neil Peart, who turned 55 on September 12, received some pretty cool belated birthday presents from Enter Music Publishing, publishers of hip/percussion magazines worldwide, such as DRUM! and Traps magazines. During this year's "Drummies", Peart was named "Drummer Of The Year" by 4000 drummers, who participated in the readership survey conducted by DRUM! for the Drummies. The runners-up were: Danny Carey, Vinnie Colaiuta, Thomas Lang. Additionally Peart won four more "Drummies" for "Progressive Rock Drummer," "Live Performer," "DVD" ("Anatomy Of A Drum Solo"), and "Drumming Album" ("Snakes & Arrows" by RUSH).

While Peart has received numerous awards for his drumming over his career, this marks the first time that he has won DRUM!'s prestigious "Drummer Of The Year".

"Neil Peart was on our June cover because we suspected this would be a big album for RUSH," said Phil Hood, publisher of Enter Music Publishing. Even though our audience skews younger than RUSH's fan base, he's a huge influence on all drummers, so it's not surprising he finally won this award from DRUM!'s readers," continued Hood.

The following is a summary of the drummers who won in some of the other categories:

Drumming Rising Star: Jason Bittner
Runners-Up: Brann Dailor, Andrew Hurley, Benny Greb

Progressive Rock Drummer: Neil Peart
Runners-Up: Mike Portnoy, Danny Carey, Gavin Harrison

Metal Drummer: Jason Bittner

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Is Flash memory soon to be a thing of the past? Is Flash memory soon to be a thing of the past? Dr5mith 0 10/31/2007 11:12
  this is very cool :linky

The humble USB drive could soon be using a new type of memory thanks to research from the Arizona State University.

The college's Center for Applied Nanoionics (CANi) has developed a new technique for storing memory that could lead to flash memory being superseded in a number of years.

The new memory technology, which is known as programmable metallization cell (PMC), has been developed to counteract the physical limits of current memory storage technology. The college claimed that PMC could be a 1,000 times more efficient than existing flash memory and could enable devices like USB drives to greatly increase the memory of digital cameras, MP3 players and laptops.

The problem that CANi has been tackling is the physical limit of how much storage can be crammed into any given space as pushing atoms closer together causes more heat to be formed. PMC, which has been developed in conjunction with German institute, the J|lich Research Center, works by altering the way that ions are treated.

According to the ASU's own publication, ASU Insight, the methodology involves the new technique of nanoionics, where, Instead of moving electrons among charged particles, called ions, as in traditional electronics, nanoionics moves the ions themselves.

"We've actually been able to move something the size of a virus between electrodes to switch them from a high resistance to a low resistance, which is great for memory," Michael Kozicki, director of CANi, told ASU Insight

Best of all, the new technique can be used on existing, conventional storage which means that the cost will not be prohibitive.

"In using readily available materials, we've provided a way for this memory to be made at essentially zero extra cost, because the materials you need are already used in the chips-- all you have to do is mix them in a slightly different way," said Kozicki.

It might not be too long before we see products incorporating the new technology. Kozicki estimates that the first commercial product could be within 18 months. PMC has already attracted interest from several memory vendors, including Micron Technology. Samsung, Sony and IBM have also been interested in the technology.
