Community Residual Self-Image Proof of paranormal activity in The Matrix Proof of paranormal activity in The Matrix PS10N 0 06/08/2009 21:06

These pictures were taken one right after the other, using the same camera in the same position.  The location is just north of  the bench east of the Mara Central Hardline, and the time was early evening on 9 June, 1999.  The camera is a Camon Focus 420 digital set to 1280x1024 resolution.  The images are completely unedited and appear exactly as downloaded from the camera.  If you look closely in the bottom left of the second photo, you'll notice a distinct, ghostly form.  The figure only appeared for this one frame, and is not in any of the pictures taken before or after.  It's intriguing because it seems as if the apparition waited for me to look away before appearing.  This could very well be proof of paranormal activity in the Matrix.  Maybe the ghosts of dead Redpills still haunt abandoned hardlines, forever seeking their pulled jacks.  If you see anything strange or get photos of ghostly activity, please post them here.

Community General Discussion Remaining in-game issues since the hotfix and restart. Remaining in-game issues since the hotfix and restart. PS10N 0 06/04/2009 17:09

Since the hotfix and server restart, issues remain.  Please list the issues you're having here, as technically and dispassionately as possible, so that those who brought us the hot-fix can be aware of them.  Thanks.

(Mention: official word has come down that May re-subs will be able to play again soon and until the end, so we don't have to dicuss that topic in this thread.)

To start:

Roughly every 20 minutes after getting in game, I get the message "Connection to the Matrix lost. Shutting down." This is when I'm in active play or coding, not idle/AFK.  None of the other internet applications (on other computers) are interrupted, so I don't think it's a local or ISP issue.

If anyone else is having this or other issues, please reply.

After the April Fool's Joke, where most people were set to "Bluepill" rank, I can no longer access Private Messages at all.  Even though my forum rank is restored, I have no Private Messages link at the top of any page, and when I click the PM button in a post, the board tells me "You do not have permission to send/receive private messages."  I've certainly done nothing to have my permissions revoked.  Virrago, can you please look in to this and restore my permissions for Private Messages?  I am in the middle of helping a few new players and would like to reply to them.  Is anyone else having this same issue?

(This reminds me of the old tech support instruction "If your internet connection isn't working, send an email to [email protected]" or "If your phone service isn't working, call tech support at 1-800-CAT-CH22"

If this is something you need to reply to me about it private, send an email to [email protected] as I won't be able to read any reply in Private Messages.)

Thanks!

A lot of problems can be solved just by insuring that your system isn't clogged with temporary files, bad registry entries and malware.  If you are a home user, there are several good free programs available.  Those on the list below were carefully chosen to be as hassle-free and easy to use as possible.  For the technically inclined, turning off every non-essential Startup item and non-essential Service in MSCONFIG can drastically increase performance and stability.

Best FREE Antimalware (for personal use only) on Windows XP:

CCleaner

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5
Adaware 2007
AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

another decent program:

AVAST Anti-virus Home Edition

Also, check in with Kim Komando for her picks as well.  This thread can be continued by others to post links to their favorite free anti-malware and clean up utilities.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion The story of the "First Pilgrim" and a special Thanksgiving wish The story of the "First Pilgrim" and a special Thanksgiving wish PS10N 0 11/22/2007 04:42
Recently there was some discussion about Guy Fawkes Day, and how some here in the United States thought that it was only something from that movie, not knowing that it was a celebrated holiday in the United Kingdom.  It was an opportunity for us Yanks to learn some things about what's done on the other side of the Big Pond.  The United States has its share of holidays which we claim as uniquely our own, such as the Fourth of July, Halloween and Thanksgiving.  While the former will never catch on elsewhere for obvious reasons, the two latter seem to be gaining some popularity, or at least interest, around the world.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the history of Thanksgiving, The Mayflower Homepage and PilgrimHall.org have good information. (While there is good evidence that European settlers celebrated rites of "thanksgiving" before the famous Plymouth feast, those were not specifically tied to a celebration of and thanks giving for the harvest, which is what ties our current tradition and holiday to the Plymouth Colony event in the late fall of 1621.)

Originally, the group coming to the New World were to take two ships, the Mayflower and the Speedwell, but the Speedwell was in bad shape (possibly due to sabotage) and couldn't make the journey, so they both turned around and the Mayflower set out alone in 1620.  A boy was born on the high seas and was aptly named Oceanus.  When the ship finally put to anchor in a New England harbor, another boy was born, who would come to be known as the first European born in the New World.  Capt. William Bradford refers to the Leiden Separatists as "pilgrims" before the journey began, and it must have been apt, because that first child born in the New World was named Peregrine, meaning "pilgrim." (Here is a picture of his cradle.)

Peregrine White was the first child born to the Pilgrims in the New World.  Peregrine, meaning "traveler" or "Pilgrim," was born onboard the Mayflower in Provincetown harbor in November of 1620.  His parents, William and Susanna White, had boarded the Mayflower with their young son Resolved. Susanna gave birth to Peregrine before the end of November (Old Style calendar), 1620 while the Mayflower was anchored in Provincetown Harbor. William White died the first winter, Susanna White married fellow Mayflower passenger Edward Winslow.

Little Peregrine wasn't even a year old at the First Thanksgiving, but his name is listed among the 53 colonists who were there. (see the PilgrimHall.org link, and scroll down the page for the list.)  As he grew up, he would have known Governor William Bradford, watched the military drills of Captain Myles Standish, been baptized and taught by pastor William Brewster and was written about by his step-father Edward Winslow.  If he didn't know them, he would have a least grown up hearing stories of the native leaders Squanto and Massasoit.

Peregrine married Sarah Basset about 1648. Sarah’s parents, William and Elizabeth Bassett, had been members of the Leiden Separatist community; they had arrived in Plymouth in 1621 onboard the Fortune. Sarah was born after their arrival in Plymouth, sometime before 1627. Peregrine and Sarah had 7 children. At age 78, Peregrine officially joined the Marshfield church. He lived until July of 1704, dying at Marshfield aged 83.

So now you know the story of "The First Pilgrim" but the story doesn't end there, because 386 years later, Peregrine's 12th generation descendant is posting this forum message about him.  The little baby boy at the First Thanksgiving, the First Pilgrim, was my great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather.  So now I'd like to wish all of you who who took the time to read this a very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving Day, no matter what part of the world you're in.  Remember that those who live with even the smallest of luxuries are a minority on this planet, and even just having enough to eat is something to be thankful for.  And if it means anything to receive those wishes from someone carrying a copy of a piece of DNA that was there that First Thanksgiving Day, then share your blessings with others less fortunate so that, hopefully, no one has to go hungry or feel alone.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Gregory

P.S. Know that "Six Degrees of Seperation" idea?  This puts all of you just two steps or less from the crew of the Mayflower and the First Thanksgiving SMILEY<img mce_tsrc= We're all more connected than any realize!

I noticed a recent addition to the front page of www.matrixonline.com

This:

All Dell XPS desktops come standard with an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS or GTX video card!  (The low-end one has an 8600)

Umm... hello?  MxO doesn't run on an 8800 series card!  Under XP there is unplayable indoor lag and under Vista there are unplayable texture errors!

How can MxO possibly be CERTIFIED on hardware that IT DOES NOT RUN ON ?

Like all big corporations, it seems that Sony and Dell are willing TO LIE THROUGH THEIR TEETH to sell games and hardware.

I'll be sending an email to SOE and Dell about this, though I doubt it will do any good.  Would the MxO community be willing to deluge Dell with emails about this?  Even though I live in the USA, where daily lies from the media, the government and the corporations are expected, this is MxO for Neo's sake, the Truth should matter for something.

Official lies are still lies, Dell and SOE.  Shame on you.

A friend downloaded the new beta Station Launcher last night and used it to sign up for the new free trial program.  After downloading and patching the game, he gets to the first character generation screen and can't select anything because he has no mouse cursor.  He's using a Gateway wireless mouse.  For the short term, he's going to shut down and plug in a normal PS2 mouse and reboot.  Has anyone else had trouble using a wireless mouse with MxO?  I used the Search function to make sure this wasn't a known issue, but nothing relevant came up.   Update: even with a normal mouse, he has no mouse cursor at all in character generation and a stuck cursor in-game.  He stumbled thru RSI generation by visualizing where the cursor should be, but now he's in the city and can see the mouse cursor in the middle of the screen but it never moves.  Any ideas?

Community Residual Self-Image Virtual Assembly Nebuchadnezzar Modeling Program Virtual Assembly Nebuchadnezzar Modeling Program PS10N 0 09/06/2007 02:08
With all the renewed interest in hovercraft, battles in the Real, the power plants and the like, someone might be interested in a way to get some good quality 3D hovercraft pictures from various angles to use in your own graphics.  The Nebuchadnezzar Virtual Assembly model building program allows you to make a 3D Nebuchadnezzar just like you would a plastic-model-glue-and-paint kit.  It is rather tedious and time consuming to build the ship piece by piece and paint it, so when you have a completed model, get all the screen shots you need before closing the program, or you'll end up making the ship all over again. [Edit - upon closer inspection, the description says "Light and Pod functions, gun operation, automatic progress save" so evidently there is more to it than I've seen so far.] Thanks to the people of thecolony-matrixonline.com for still hosting this 38.5MB file (unzips to 45.3 MB)  There is only one other place on the web outside thecolony still hosting it after it was removed from the official site.

It's Tuesday, August 28th, 2008.  There is/was a lunar eclipse today, and so also a full moon.  If it's between noon and four PM eastern time, I'm in surgery for what I hope is the last repair of my ankles.  The simple arthroscopy should easily rinse out bone chip(s) from the joint, and the surgeon will take a look around in there with the camera/forceps tool to make sure about it.  Since they are going to put me under general anesthesia, there is a very small chance that I'll get to find out about that whole heaven / hell / pergatory / reincarnation / oblivion / city of the dead / summerlands / happy hunting grounds thing before any of you do, so na-na-na-na-na-nah.  I get to face death today, stare him in his bony face and demand the money he still owes me from last time.  What did YOU do today?

If I don't make it back I expect all of MxO/Recursion to throw the biggest party since Morpheus kicked it, and share stories of my life and times in Megacity.  Then, I expect an NPC named PS10N to be placed near Sai Kung Central, telling players to work together to code one another abilities and other items, and generally help one another and work toward things greater than can be accomplished alone. (Hey, if I'm dead, I can make unrealistic demands and there is nothing you can do about it!)

If this is my final missive, then listen up (I've said this before but you weren't listening)
LOVE AND CARE FOR ONE ANOTHER WITH COMPASSION AND UNDERSTANDING.
Because if you don't have/give the love of friends and family, ya got nothin'

If you happen to get this while I'm under, send me some love / light so I don't wander.  Thanks!

Title says it all (and then some.)  I would like to report an issue with the forums, but don't see a Forum Feedback forum.  Where is the best place to post feedback about the forums?

The issue is with the format when viewing more than one page of a user's posts.  For example, in every user's profile you'll see the line.

Number of messages posted: [x] Messages posted by username

You can click on the example to see my (now over 100!) posts, but if you then click on the "Go to Page" links, "2" or "Next," the result is either a blank page or the format defaults to a list of the posts rather than displaying the posts themselves.

What brings this up is that there are some incredible artists in the MxO community, Pyraci and Rarebit foremost in my mind, and it would be great to be able to see what they have posted over time without having to hunt-and-click every post.  I'm going to play with the Search function and see if the results can be narrowed down enough, but simply making the format uniform in the "messages posted by..." output would allow us to see another user's 'showcase.'

Community Player Events The Battle for One Zero - Prelude The Battle for One Zero - Prelude PS10N 0 07/27/2006 21:19
Mazdak walked along the hovercraft’s aft corridor, toward the Captain’s private quarters, his boots clunking heavily on the steel grating.  He’d been the operator onboard TLR for almost two years now, and he’d come to think of the drafty old re-built hovercraft as home.  A big hulk of a man, his large frame barely fit through some of the narrow hallways back here near the billets and crew quarters.  Free born in the Real World forty-something years ago, his size and strength had always been valued for physical labor in Zion, but his real passion was art.  Build something useful and people would be appreciative now, but create something beautiful and it would be appreciated forever.  Some of his paintings hung in the gallery near the Temple Cave in Zion, and Captain PS10N approved of some being displayed in the ship’s galley and a few other places around the craft.  You can’t stare at gray gunmetal bulkheads all the time and still keep a good attitude.  Somewhere, there has to be beauty in your life.  Sure, under the Truce, operatives could take time out while in The Matrix to visit a museum or watch a sunset, but the free-born couldn’t Jack In to do that.  With nature devastated in the Real, beauty was more often where you created it than where you found it.  “I need some time alone with my brushes and canvas,” Mazdak thought as the space between himself and the Captain’s door closed to nothing with a few more long strides.  He hesitated for a moment before knocking.  The Captain had been moody lately; something was up.  Mazdak still remembered clearly the day PS10N had recruited him.  “I need someone I can trust, to keep my back from sprouting knives,” he’d said.  “You’re as artistic with the Code as you are with your brushes, and I want you on my crew.”  They’d been through a lot since then – the collection of the fragments of The One’s RSI, fighting with the Red-eye Agents, the Ancient Exile rebellion, the tricky business with Morpheus over a year ago, assisting in Neurophyte’s escape and trying to stop the subsequent betrayal by Veil, seeing to it that the Assassin got what was coming to him, working with the Enigma Directive and discovering the truth about Cryptos and the Machine deception behind the Cypherite movement, sending the Sleepers back to their dirt-naps and now… now this problem with Anome and his betrayal of Niobe.  That must be what was bothering the Captain.  Before Morpheus went underground, he’d asked PS10N to keep an eye on Niobe, and now Niobe was wounded and imprisoned. That wouldn’t sit well with PS10N’s sense of obligation and responsibility toward his old friend Morpheus.  Unlike so many these days, honor still meant something to the Captain.  The night before Anome’s treachery, PS10N had warned Niobe’s second officer Merrit that someone close to Niobe would betray her soon, but the liaison officer evidently hadn’t had the opportunity to act before it was too late.  Mazdak had learned to trust PS10N’s prescience of fore-thought, that uncanny ability called The Sight by the Oracle, to catch glimpses of what was to be before any rational clue could be gleaned.  What was it that The Oracle had said to PS10N at their first and only meeting?  Something along the line of “You have something of The Sight yourself, PS10N, and you’ve had it since before your Awakening, what with all that business of looking into the ‘paranormal.’ They don’t call you PS10N for nothing, you know, and you don’t really need me to tell you which way the wind is blowing – or where the code streams flow, for that matter.” That was long ago.  Today, and probably more so tomorrow, were most important now.  He raised his hand to knock, but PS10N’s voice answered before he could “Come on in, Maz.  I’ve been expecting you.”  Mazdak’s serious expression broke into a broad grin.  Of all the things that had changed and would change, PS10N’s sense of immediacy, of being ready for what was coming, would be there and give them the edge they would surely need.   … to be continued immediately …

It's been noted that if a user types up a message, hits "Submit Post" and the message contains certain errors, the input box is blanked out, clicking Back does no good and the message is seemingly gone forever unless the poster used Copy on the text before clicking Submit.

Here is the best way around it: click Preview Post after every edit.  This will remove any errors from the message AND still retains the debugged message text in the input box.  If you  don't ever hit "Submit Post" until you get a "Preview Post" that does not report any errors in your entry, then you will never lose a post again.

Dateline Megacity: Giant Beta Zombie Terrorizes Tabor Park!

Gregori Lomax Reporting

As Redpills gathered to watch A Piece of Blue Sky: Reloaded, they were startled as Bluepills fled in terror from a huge zombie looming over the park.  Is this some long dead code from a previous version of the Matrix, raised to threaten the system?  "What is the Merovingian up to this time?" an anonymous Redpill asked.

[I just upgraded to 1.5 GB of DDR400 and a GeForce 6800 video card, which has 5 choices for antialiasing, some of which aren't compatible with MxO and produce... interesting... effects.  Note that this is not an MxO bug, because I found an antialiasing setting which looks great and runs smoothly.]

Community Residual Self-Image A Higher Perspective A Higher Perspective PS10N 0 03/24/2006 10:25

Intro:  The bar for art derived from screenshots has been raised by Aquatium with his motion captures and by the other fantastic sigs and graphics posted lately.  We've seen a lot of character action and street-level scenes, so in an effort to broaden the horizons and rise above the commonplace, I've taken to the skies of the Megacity to bring you some cityscapes and skylines.  I hope you like them, as there are more in the works and your comments are most welcome.  If you have a favorite tourist attraction in the city, point it out to me and I'll get some birds' eye views.

A Higher Perspective

We walk the dirty, dangerous streets of the Megacity, the pedestrian view transcended briefly when belief leaps us from here to there, but always we are brought crashing down again.  We do not know the ultimate freedom of mind to see the sights from the places where Neo flew.  There are those places where we might climb the tall steps toward enlightenment, but when a monument of ascension seems like a bleak and stunted post under a dark Westview sky, the question must be asked, is The Matrix an island of darkness or is it an island of light?  So much depends on perspective.  Something vague is only obscure when viewed from a distance and when one draws near, it is suddenly made clear.  This is a contrived world, designed and made as complex as is necessary to complete an illusion of code sufficient to fool our senses.  It is no wonder that those who seek power also desire a higher perspective as well.  Like a moon obscured in haze the truth is continually hidden from our perception, and we call royal what is called royal by others. Heed this: that skyline is an illusion and so many of you do not navigate the code stream, but are falling out of control. Never forget that this was designed to be and forever is a system of control and the evil machinations are seen in the corrupt corporations and government which look down from their ivory towers.  Neither should you succumb to the temptations of the jaded madmen who revel in the view from the windows of their pleasure palace.  The world never stops and if you are looking for that one rare bit of code to complete the structure then you need but pause and take in the sight of the sunrise over the city or savor the splendor of a sunrise over Sai Kung or even better, revel in the perfection of Sati's masterpiece.  When we dare to rise above and gain a new perspective, open our eyes to a better perception, free our minds like Neo truly did, then how far we might see! If you desire reasonable freedom, a measure of power and a stable Matrix, then you are probably a Redpill like me no matter what tag is encoded on your RSI.

The upcoming anniversary has sparked conversations with the leader of The Sirens, a member of The Collective and my friends in Fallen Horizon and it's  led me to wonder how many original Beta Factions are still active on Recursion.  This also has me wondering about The Furious Angels and other tags we used to see all the time in Beta but which didn’t stand the test of time.

So, here are the criteria.  If the Faction you are active in right now was formed in Beta and still operates under the exact same name, then please post your faction name, Org, start date (if you know) and the original founder(s) and current leader(s).  [sorry, Phrack, I had to narrow the field somehow… mad props to you for everything you’ve done with your faction(s) through it all, but I’m looking for full continuity here.]

I’ll fill in the details for The Brethren as others post their data, but here’s the list I have so far:

The Sirens – Merovingian

The Collective – Machines

Fallen Horizon – Zion

The Brethren – Zion

Your assistance is much appreciated…

Today, Sunday January 19, 2006 is the one-year anniversary of PS10N’s first Jack-In to The Matrix Online!  Please come celebrate this milestone of my joining the Beta community back in 2005.  It’s been a great year of making friends, killing enemies, adventuring and role-playing in The Matrix.  I hope that maybe I’ve even made a difference in helping other players enjoy their Matrix experiences.  All day long (starting at about 2 PM Eastern Time) in the field at Richland.Midian Park (West) Hardline on the Recursion server, gather to party and discuss the year behind as well as the year ahead in the Matrix.  Why Midian Park West?  Because PS10N first appeared there a year ago!  [Back then a new RSI might appear at any one of several Richland Hardlines, not just Uriah Industrial (Northeast) like it is now.]  Sport your Beta clothes for screenshots or pick up some tips on macro coding, novel uses of the hotbar and other little known enhancements to your Matrix experience.  Come and role-play thru some very exciting times in The Matrix Online, and tune into Split Infinity Radio for announcements and updates on the party.

Who: PS10N and YOU!
What: One year in the Matrix celebration
Where: Recursion server, Richland.Midian Park (West) Hardline, outdoor party in the field.
When: Sunday January 19, 2005 from 2 PM Eastern Time (7 PM Greenwich Mean Time) until we just can’t party no more!
Why: because I’ve been playing for a year and know that YOU the community are the best part of this game! : )
How: double click the Matrix Online icon on your desktop… you know the drill!
